The Basin Business Advisors program realizes that operating a profitable farm requires a different set of skills than running a bricks and mortar store or a service business. We have Advisors and consultants who specialize in helping agricultural producers with the business of operating their farm. Growing or producing the product efficiently is just the start of operating a successful farm business. We can help you with the business of agriculture.
Our objective is to work with primary producers throughout the Columbia Basin to help strengthen their businesses. We provide free, one-to-one, confidential business counselling and assessment services to help identify issues and opportunities.
This may include an hour or two of bouncing ideas off our experienced Advisor, or it might mean extended time working with you to delve deeper into your operation in order to provide recommendations and plans that you can execute in order to be more efficient and profitable.
Common areas of support include:
- financial analysis;
- cost of production analysis;
- market research and marketing;
- developing “go to market” plans;
- business and strategic planning;
- distribution analysis;
- human resources;
- general business viability; and
To participate in the program, the farm MUST be:
- a for-profit farm that is actively conducting business and earning business income; or
- a non-profit society considering or already operating a Social Enterprise farm; and
- headquartered in the Basin; and
- in compliance with all Canadian laws and regulations.
In order to be successful, the program requires the interest, commitment and time of the farm operator. The owner must be willing to openly discuss business situations, disclose critical issues that impact the business and share confidential business financial information. Non-disclosure agreements will be used.
Following the completion of Agriculture Specialist counselling and assessment services, the Agriculture Specialist may recommend the services of a specialized independent business consultant to provide further analysis and recommendations on a specific area of farm business management. The BBA program provides a contribution to the cost of specialized business consulting services.
The Agriculture Specialist works closely with the Kootenay Boundary Farm Advisors program. If you are interested in support regarding technical extension services and the “science of farming”, please review www.kbfa.ca for available resources and support.
