Agriculture Succession Planning

Farm Succession Planning

Planning for a successful transition of your farm, whether to a family member or an outside buyer, requires careful thought and work. Not only is there land, equipment, buildings and possibly livestock to consider, there’s also your legacy.

Succession planning addresses concerns before they become major problems and, if it is a family farm, aims to bridge the gap between generations of farmers. Early planning allows time to consider legal obligations, taxes and family goals for a smooth and efficient transition.

This workshop gets you started on the process and provides a framework to move forward with transitioning your farm. There are many variables to consider and each case is unique. We will walk you through the available resources and where our Agriculture Specialist can provide support.

This one hour workshop is presented virtually on Zoom by our Agriculture Specialist, Nyree Marsh and Program Manager, Alison Bjorkman. Bring your questions and particular challenges, as this will be an interactive workshop.

 We will cover:

  • preparing your farm business for sale;
  • tax, life and estate tips;
  • critical issues
  • settings goals; and
  • starting valuable but sometimes difficult conversations with farm stakeholders

 Who can benefit:

  • farmers who are looking at transitioning their operation to the next generation
  • farmers who are looking at selling outside the family
  • farmers who are retiring
  • farmers who have an agricultural business perhaps without land attached
  • family members interested in entering the family farm operation
