Nyree is a business owner who has over 20 years of hands-on experience in and knowledge of agriculture. Prior to her joining the BBA team in 2020, Nyree established farm businesses and worked with existing farmers within Canada and overseas. A certified organic farmer, she has also worked extensively in providing food to her community through farmer’s markets, CSA and farm gate sales, in addition to working as a sous chef in several restaurants in Canada and abroad – and more recently, making gelato and sorbet in Nelson.
Nyree was raised in the foothills of Alberta, leaving after graduation for coastal B.C., where at 21 she leased her first market garden on Salt Spring Island. This firsthand experience proves highly valuable in supporting her role as Agriculture Specialist.
Since moving to the Kootenays in 2005, Nyree has established deep roots in the local farming community, working as a certified organic farmer, as well as a volunteer committee member with the Kootenay Organic Growers Society. She is a familiar face at many farm networking events and socials.
Nyree’s great joy and interest is in feeding people, while constantly learning and sharing in the diverse food traditions celebrated by farmers of all backgrounds. Her interest and experience extend beyond the farm gate to Basin food security. As the BBA’s Agriculture Specialist, she is committed to assisting farmers to find resources and develop tools specific to their business needs, as they continue to feed our local communities.
Based out of Community Futures Central Kootenay, Nyree provides agriculture-specific advisory services to farmers throughout the Basin.
